Varkala

Varkala is Kerala’s cliff-top beach paradise. Unlike most of Kerala’s flat coastline, Varkala’s beach sits dramatically at the foot of towering laterite cliffs, creating a landscape that feels more Mediterranean than tropical Indian. The cliff-top promenade is lined with cafes, yoga shalas, Ayurvedic centres, and shops, making it a favourite among backpackers, yoga practitioners, and those seeking a more bohemian Kerala experience.

The beach itself — Papanasam Beach — is considered sacred in Hindu tradition, believed to wash away sins. The ancient Janardhana Swami Temple, perched on the cliff above, is over 2,000 years old and draws pilgrims year-round. But Varkala is equally loved for its contemporary vibe: sunset yoga sessions on the cliff edge, fresh seafood dinners with ocean views, and a laid-back community of travellers from around the world who come for a week and stay for a month.
